Whether it’s a poem, short story, essay, or manuscript, contests are a great way to put yourself out there. As with querying, be sure to read the entry guidelines and be aware that a number of the contests do have an entry or reading fee. Have courage, my dear writer. Be brave, be bold, and submit.

  1. Galtelli Literary Prize. Deadline: April 15th, 2017. Fee: Free.  Genre: Flash fiction told in 15 words or less. Prize: €1000 and publication. Word Max: 5,000.
  2. Aliens and Wine Short Story Contest. Deadline: April 30th, 2017. Fee: Free. Genre: Fiction. Prize: $700 Amazon Voucher. Word Max: 200-500.
  3. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. Deadline: Four deadlines per year. See site for details* Fee: Free. Genre: Fantasy or Science Fiction. Prize: Every 3 months of $1,000, $750, $500. Word Max: 17,000.
  4. The Bath Short Story Award.  Deadline: May 1st, 2017. Fee: £8. Genre: Short story, any genre. Prize: £1000 first prize, £200 second prize, £100 third prize, £50  for the local prize in vouchers –  donated by Mr B’s Emporium of Books, Bath. £50 for the Acorn Award for an unpublished writer. Word Max: 2,200
  5. The Bristol Short Story Prize. Deadline: May 3rd, 2017.  Fee: £8 Genre: Any. Prize: £1,000. Word Max: 4,000
