3 Apps for Writers

Gone are the days when writing was an affair strictly between pen and paper; fingertips and the keys of a typewriter. As technology advanced, so have the methods of writing. Today you can find a myriad of applications to use, whether on your laptop or smartphone, to enhance and compliment your writing experience. Here are the three apps I found most useful as a writer:

  1. Hemingway AppThis app is a proofreader that looks for common errors that hinder your writing. Its goal is to help polish your work with a concise, minimalist approach.
    1. What does it do?
      • The use of long sentences.
      • Adverbs used.
      • Complex phrases or words.
        • If words are too complex, it will suggest simpler ones.
      • Passive voice.
      • If words are used repetitively.
    2. What doesn’t it do?
      • It won’t tell you how to shorten the long sentences.
      • It won’t mention what you should do with the adverbs.
      • It won’t tell you how to substitute active voice for passive.
    3. My OP?
      • I’ve used the Hemingway app in the past and found I liked using it for first drafts of poetry. It’s not always spot on but it reminds me to be aware of using passive voice and opaque wording. Overall, it’s as useful as you make it.
  2. Merriam-Webster DictionaryThis app might sound redundant but think how hard it is to find the word you’re looking for. Having a digital dictionary on hand gives you access to a larger library of words and it’s available anytime, anywhere. 
    1. What does it do?
      • It searches for words, of course!
    2. What doesn’t it do?
      • Pretty much anything else.
    3. My OP?
      • I use it on a frequent basis. I can’t and won’t live without it.
  3. Google Docs & Google Drive – It’s funny how we focus on all these apps with the words “writer” in them or we go to the ends of the earth for a program like Scrivner but overlook the one app right in front of us. Google Docs and Drive is cloud space where projects are saved automatically. How is this valuable for a writer? Well:
    1. What does it do?
      • It’s a free and mobile service.
      • Exports documents in various file formats
      • It saves as you write and all changes are saved, which means you can also view previous edits.
      • It can be used for group writing projects where changes can be viewed live.
      • You can research topics inside the document.
      • There are templates available.
      • The list goes on and on and on!
    2. What doesn’t it do?
      • I haven’t found an answer to this question yet.
    3. My OP?
      • I’m completely biased. I used Google Docs and Drive for pretty much all my writing, so it’s safe to say I LOVE it.
